Day 1 and 2 - 35 hours in transit (Wednesday 2 May, Thursday 3 May)

And we're off!  This morning at 09:00am sharp (Mr Oosthuysen was actually a very friendly drill sergeant in his previous life), we left the school to embark on our European adventure.  The drive to King Shaka International was very uneventful, with most boys sleeping or chilling on their devices.  We arrived at the airport at 12:00pm, and went straight to the baggage wrapping counter.  Thereafter we went to the Spur for lunch (a very tasty burger and chips) - hold the chips for one very disciplined Grade 9, who is on a very strict (self-enforced) no-carb diet.  The staff are all eagerly awaiting how that is going to work out for him in the lands of schnitzels, mashed potatoes and pomme frites... :)  But we support him - carbs are very unhealthy...and we are sure that six-pack is going to be worth it in the end - maybe Chef and Mr. Oosthuysen should also start eating "healthier"...... Day 5 - Sunday 6 May

Our day started with a breakfast at 07:00am in the dining room of the Jugendhotel Markushof.  A typical German/Austrian breakfast usually consists of a variety of bread rolls and bread, different types of sliced cheese, a selection of cold meats, as well as yogurt, cereals, and fruit. We left the hotel at 07:45am, as we had to be at the church in Wagrain where we sang as part of the service this morning at 08:30am.  It is a Catholic church, and for most boys, it was a novelty to experience the structure and order of a Catholic mass.  We sang between each different part of the mass, and the audience was very moved by the choir's diversity and sound. Fun fact:  Joseph Mohr, the poet who wrote the words for the very popular Christmas carol  Silent Night, was a priest in the exact church where we sang this morning.  His grave is in the graveyard just outside the church.  The boys honored his memory by singing Silent Night around his grave after the service. Day 6 - Monday 7 May

The boys had a wake-up time of 06:45am this morning and had to be ready for breakfast at 07:30am.   We departed for Werfen, 40km south of Salzburg - about an hour's drive - where we were going to visit Eisriesenwelt.  The Eisriesenwel (German for "World of the Ice Giants") is a natural limestone and ice cave inside the Hochkogel mountain in the Alps.  It is the largest ice cave in the world, extending more than 42 km and visited by about 200,000 tourists every year.  Although the cave has a length of 42 km, only the first kilometer, the area that tourists are allowed to visit, is covered in ice.  The rest of the cave is formed of limestone.  Eisriesenwelt was formed by the Salzach river, which eroded passageways into the mountain.  The ice formations in the cave we formed by thawing snow which drained into the cave and froze during winter.  Since the entrance to the cave is open year-round, chilly winter winds blow into the cave and freeze the snow inside.  In summer
